Sinopsis: Dave Kovic (Kevin Kline) es un sencillo ciudadano que guarda un extraordinario parecido con el presidente de los Estados Unidos Bill Mitchell. Cuando un repentino ataque incapacita al presidente, sus asesores políticos deciden que Dave lo suplante, dando por supuesto que será un hombre fácil de manipular. Por otra parte, la esposa del presidente (Sigourney Weaver), que ignora la situación, encuentra tan anómala la conducta de su supuesto marido que empieza a sospechar.
