Sinopsis: Martin Vail (Richard Gere) es un ambicioso abogado de Chicago, capaz de aceptar cualquier caso con tal de salir en la prensa. Un día acepta un caso en apariencia imposible de ganar: la defensa de Aaron (Edward Norton), un joven acusado de asesinar al arzobispo de Chicago tras ser detenido huyendo del lugar del crimen.
