Sinopsis: En vísperas de la guerra civil americana (1861-1865), el idealista profesor John Wickliff Shawnessy abandona a Nell Gaither, su amor de juventud, e inicia un apasionado romance con Susanna Drake, una rica y hermosa sureña de Nueva Orleáns, que acaba en boda. Una vez casados, John averigua que la madre de Susanna murió en un asilo para enfermos mentales y empieza a temer que se trate de una enfermedad hereditaria.
