Sinopsis: Estados Unidos, principios de los 70. Bob Hughes es el jefe de una banda de toxicómanos, integrado por su mujer, Diane, y otra pareja, Rick y Nadine. Viajan a lo largo y ancho del país atracando farmacias para cubrir su imperiosa necesidad de droga. A raíz de la muerte de Nadine por sobredosis, Bob se replantea su situación; decide rehabilitarse y comenzar una nueva vida. Las cosas, sin embargo, no le resultan sencillas, ya que se encuentra con la total incomprensión de su mujer y con la sombra de la tentación acechándolo día y noche.
