Sinopsis: Un desencantado profesor de lingüística de la Universidad de California se entera de la muerte de un lejano familiar en Missouri. Viaja a través del país para asistir al funeral y decide quedarse allí trabajando en una compañía eléctrica. Al mismo tiempo, conoce a una mujer de la que se enamora pero entonces se enfrenta a una difícil decisión sobre qué rumbo debe seguir su vida.
